Justice and Language
Pony
at WWGHA brought some thoughts worth remembering.
Justice
If sentient organisms with prefrontal cortices as, or more, developped as ours (or structures that evolved the same function) did not exist on this, or any, planet, justice would not exist.
This is the only intellectually honest statement one can make from an objective point of view based on the evidence so far collected. If we get to make statements about justice based on myth tales, well, take your pick, but you're making a judgement based on the opinions of people who also scarificed goats and people to their volcano gods. I really don't see how someone making reasonable judgements is inflexible or close-minded for not regarding myth stories with any weight when conducting honest inquiry.
Language determining possibility
1) Here's where I will try to work in what I said above about language. It works in this example as well, maybe. Belief and language are both parts of what we label culture (as defined in my last post). I assume english is the first language where you live. You can study english, alter it's usage to fit your environment and disposition, heck you can even invent words. Some people can, with adequate social context, adopt a new language and stop speaking english alltogether, but this is rare, you need a community where that language can function and be accepted...etc. Your description of your dealings with christianity matches that pattern. Democgraphics describe our behaviour, belief behaviours, verbal behaviour...etc, but it doesn't mean we're less, on the contrary I would say, it empowers (or embiggens ;) ) us.
2) "experiencing that transformation for yourself." Can I observe the transformation in others? Will that population differ significantly from a population that has not had the same experience? What is the rate of correlation between the experience and the measured behaviour? What is the tool of measurement?
What jumps out at me is that if your language doesn't have a word for it you cannot do it.
Arabic does not contain the concepts within the language that allow one to invent flight. In fact one cannot fly an airplane in Arabic. Imagine a language without a word for justice. Thoughts of justice and injustice would be unthinkable.
