Ritual Sorry-ness
“To be sure, prophetic condemnation of animal sacrifices occurred from time to time, but the prophetic objection was not directed against animal sacrifices per se; rather, it was an objection to sacrificial offerings in a context devoid of genuine repentance, devoid of compassion for the needy, devoid of a true commitment to justice. It was any ritual divorced from true spirituality, not only animal sacrifice, that was the object of prophetic condemnation.”
Indeed. But isn't this the whole unintended consequence of a sacrificial system? An act completely divorced from the error is ritually done to solve the offense of the error, so you don't get killed for the error.
So it doesn't matter what I do, as long as I do the right ritual and say sorry there is no consequence. I can continue repreating the error and the ritual sorry-ness forever. The same holds true for Jesus sacrifice. This is the system god set up, and he wants to complain that it is abused? What a tool.
